Family Has March In Behalf Of Man Shot By East Ridge Police
Chief Phillips Stands Behind Officers
posted November 8, 2009

The family and friends of a man shot by East Ridge Police held a march and candlelight vigil in his behalf in East Ridge on Sunday.

The family claims three officers used excessive force in the shooting near Parkridge East Hospital.

Family members said Richard Dunn tried to flee because he was facing going back to jail.

Officers claimed they fired on the 20-year-old Dunn when he ran his car toward them.

East Ridge Police Chief Eddie Phillips said, "The city of East Ridge extends condolences to the family of Richard Dunn in their loss. However, Mr. Dunn chose to use a stolen vehicle as a deadly weapon against police officers in order to avoid capture for his crimes.

"We stand behind the actions of our officers in protecting both their own lives and the lives of innocent citizens.

"Even though the organizers of this event failed to obtain a permit, in violation of city ordinance, due to the small number of participants, we allowed the event to take place with certain restrictions."
