posted November 10, 2009

The National Weather Service said late Tuesday morning that a flood advisory is in effect for South Chickamauga Creek through Wednesday.

Sustained moderate rains from Tropical Storm Ida are due to continue through Tuesday night.

Chattanooga is within a wide area under a flash flood watch through Wednesday.

Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected by Wednesday morning. Locally higher amounts are possible.

NWS officials said the situation is still fluid, depending on where the heaviest rain will fall.

At this point, South Chickamauga Creek was at 5.6 feet on Tuesday at 10 a.m., but it was expected to rise to near 16 feet by Wednesday afternoon.

The flood stage is 18 feet.

At 18 feet, water begins to cross Mack Smith Road and flooding begins at golf courses near the confluence of South and West Chickamauga Creeks. West Chickamauga Creeks begins to overflow its banks as well.
