Stephens was recruited by and received interest from several other schools. He led Soddy-Daisy in several statistical categories and was chosen Best of Preps in his sophomore and junior seasons. He was also named to the all-district team as a sophomore and junior as well as TBCA all region team.
During his junior season he led Hamilton County with 13 home runs. He carried a batting average of .382 with 38 RBI's. and .930 slugging percentage.
