Joy Cain and Kara Lee scored goals that propelled the Scots to victory over Cincinnati Christian on Friday. Saturday saw a patient, hard-working team effort produce another victory. This time, it was the visiting Campbellsville University who were the victims, falling 1-0 to Covenant in the NCCAA region final.
The wins propel the Lady Scots to nationals.
"Today was a great show of patience by our team," said Coach Mark Duble after the match, "The defense was great in allowing only three shots, the midfield controlled the field well, and forward Lauren Probst was there to score the goal when we needed it most."
Indeed, after outshooting Campbellsville 7-0 in the first half, and 7-3 in the second, Covenant was made to wait until the 82nd minute for Probst's goal.
Senior Jenny Carter earned the assist, beating several defenders before sliding a pass to the wide open Probst, who squeezed the ball beneath goalkeeper Erin Grimsley for a 1-0 Covenant lead that would not be relinquished.
Junior Aubrey Brown and senior Becky Galage also drew praise after the game for their performances. The first producing an inspiring effort with several key tackles and runs forward, and the latter teaming up with goalkeeper Bethany Holman to make a key stop on a Campbellsville breakaway. These stops proved to be crucial, as Covenant walked away with the regional title and a national tournament berth.
The Lady Scots will now await seeding for the tournament, which will take place in Kissimmee, Fla., beginning Dec. 2.
"Today was a great game to watch and both squads played hard," said Coach Duble after the game, "It was a good day for Covenant soccer."
