Richard Jones Widow Suing Over Cremation Case
posted May 22, 2002

Judith Ann Jones is asking $20 million in damages against Wann Funeral Home, funeral director John T. Hargis, the Tri-State crematory and members of the Brent Marsh family in connection with handling of the body of her husband, Richard Kimball Jones.

Mrs. Jones filed suit in Hamilton County Circuit Court.

The suit says Mr. Jones died April 29, 1999, and Wann was paid $1,700 for the cremation. Mr. Jones was owner of Kickoff Printing Company, was a Korean War veteran and “a devoted husband and father who was deeply loved by his family,” he suit says.

Mr. Jones had talked with Wann Funeral Home about his funeral arrangements, it was stated.

The suit says the body of Mr. Jones was taken to the Noble, Ga., crematory and was one of the 339 uncremated bodies discovered there.

It says, “Her grief and suffering over the death of her husband, from which she had been recovering, was renewed and magnified a hundred-fold upon the discovery of Richard Kimball Jones’ body and plaintiff’s realization that the body had been desecrated, tossed aside and left to decompose with hundreds of others at the cemetery. Plaintiff was horrified and shocked and plaintiff continues to grieve and suffer each day as a result of the harm inflicted.”

The suit, filed by attorney Larry Campbell, asks $10 million compensatory damages and $10 million punitive damages.
