13 McCallie Seniors Named Merit Semifinalists
posted September 26, 2002

Thirteen McCallie seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 2003 Merit Scholarship Competition.

This is one of the highest academic honors that can be given to a student and means that the 13 McCallie semifinalists are in the top one-half of one percent of all high school students in the nation.

In all, more than 1.3 million students took the qualifying tests last spring, and 16,000 were selected as semifinalists.

Once again this year, McCallie had the largest number of semifinalists of any school in the Chattanooga area.

As semifinalists, the students will be eligible to compete for $30 million in college scholarships to be offered next spring.

The McCallie recipients are: Atlas Anagnos from Montgomery, Ala.; Matt Benton from Chattanooga; Richard Bethune from Rocky Mount, N.C.; Drew Bromfield from Signal Mountain; Lee Coan from Winston-Salem, N.C.; William Dann from Lookout Mountain; Luke Habegger from Winston-Salem, N.C.; Ben Mayo from Signal Mountain; Wilson McCrory from Charlotte, N.C., Vivek Rao from Chattanooga; David Ray from Signal Mountain, Tenn.;, Taylor Smith from Lexington, Ky., and Alex Thorn from Hixson.
