Planning Commission Rejects Cell Tower, Brainerd Apartments
posted November 11, 2002

The Planning Commission on Monday afternoon recommended rejection for an 81-unit apartment complex in Brainerd that was opposed by City Council Chairman Ron Littlefield.

The panel also voted against two projects in East Brainerd opposed by Councilman Jack Benson and some East Brainerd neighborhood groups.

Mr. Littlefield spoke before the commission on the request by The Nicholas Group for the apartment project at Sunnyside Drive.

Mr. Benson was serving on the planning panel.

Mr. Littlefield said Brainerd had been working since the 1970s toward single family homes rather than multi-family units. He said the project was "inappropriate for the area."

Other residents said the site was a steep ravine, and they said it would add to traffic problems and devalue property.

On East Brainerd cases, the commission voted against a request by the East Brainerd Youth Athletic Council for a cell tower at 101 Batters Place near Jenkins Road.

The council said the revenue from the cell tower would allow the group to build more ballfields and provide more youth programs.

It also recommended against a request by John Haddock and Pamela Prince for rezoning at 7693 Shallowford Road for a neighborhood veterinary clinic.

Mr. Benson said both requests were contrary to the Hamilton County Plan adopted earlier by the Planning Commission and City Council.
