Lawrence "Adair" Brotherton, 85, of Chickamauga, died on Monday, Feb. 3, 2003.

Mr. Brotherton was known as the town historian in Chickamauga and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was a member of Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church where he was the chairman of the Trust Committee, former Church Historian, member of the Administrative Board, former Sunday School Teacher for the J.O.Y. Class, and a member of the Men's Class. He was a former employee of Hart's Auto Parts for 17 years in the Chattanooga/Northwest Georgia area and was the former owner/operator of Brotherton House Furniture for 26 years in Chickamauga. He was a former member of the Chickamauga Lions Club, a founding member of the Chickamauga Merchants Association, founding member of The Gordon Lee Memorial High School Alumni Association, a member of the Northwest George Travel and Tourism Association, a two-term Senator for the Silver-Haired Legislature, former Councilman Record and Fire and Police Commissioner for the City of Chickamauga. He was the past curator for The Lee and Gordon Mill, past curator for The Walker County Regional History Museum, and was the Chairman of the Walker County sesquicentennial Celebration.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lawrence and Ruth Baker Brotherton; and brother, Jack L. Brotherton.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lillian "Polly" Craven Brotherton; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Tony Barnes, Jo and Fred Brock, all of Chickamauga; grandchildren, Patrick Cook and Fiance', Tammy Higgins, Cravena nd Brion Frix, Andrea Barnes and Fiance', Jordan Fruchtman; great-grandchild, Alexus Adairia Cone; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church with Rev. Scobie Branson officiating.

Interment will follow in Chickamauga Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, then 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday morning at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Trust Fund at Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church.
