Winner of nine Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s glorious tale of wartime romance is considered by many to be one of the best musicals ever written. A Broadway classic rich in humor and eloquent in song, South Pacific features an unforgettable score of enduring standards, like “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy,” “Bali Hai,” “Younger Than Springtime,” “There Is Nothing Like a Dame,” and “Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair.”
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein joined forces to create the most consistently profitable partnership in American musical theater. Their first musical Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair, South Pacific, The King and I, The Sound of Music, and many more Tony, Grammy and Academy Award winning musicals.
Set in an island paradise during World War II, South Pacific tells of two parallel love stories threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie Forbush, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile DeBeque. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses his proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the American Lieutenant Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he’s fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe’s life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.
South Pacific is produced by Troika Entertainment, which is in its third decade of producing Broadway touring shows throughout North America and the world. Productions include Smokey Joe’s Café, Grease, Will Rogers Follies, 42nd Street and more.
