Widows who receive assistance from Widows Harvest Ministries were helped this Thanksgiving season by the Chattanooga Association of Realtors (CAR) which collected an estimated 1,500 nonperishable food, household and toiletry items.

The food drive was sponsored by the CAR Public Relations Committee and most of the items were collected by 10 member offices, according to committee Chairman Sue Fessler.

The office collecting the most items was Crye-Leike Realtors in Hixson with more than 500 items, followed by Coldwell Banker Pryor Realty and Crye-Leike in Fort Oglethorpe.

Realtors annually collect food, household and toiletry items for the locally based ministry.

Widows Harvest Ministries is a Chattanooga-based non-profit service organization responding to the Biblical mandate in James 1:27 to “visit the widows in their distress.” Widows Harvest stated, “We have been assisting widows in a number of areas, including home repair and yard work, since 1987.”

The Widows Harvest statement added, “For widows in urban America the outlook can often be quite bleak. Government agencies as well as local churches are often limited in the types of assistance they are able to provide to help meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of widows in their particular area.”

The organization responds to the needs of women of all ages whose husbands have either died, divorced them, abandoned them or perhaps are in prison or in a nursing home.

Members of the Realtor Public Relations Committee recently loaded several SUVs and pickup trucks with the boxes and bags of collected items and delivered them to Widows Harvest in preparation for Thanksgiving.
