As much of the country has heard and been debating, during the Super Bowl half time show, there was an exposure of Janet Jackson’s breast at the end of a performance. Various sources state that what happened was indeed planned and approved by the CBS network. There has been great public outcry against this action.
To many people, what was so bad about this was the early hour it was shown and that it happened in the middle of a football game. Most people assume that it is safe to let your child watch a sport event and not have to worry about content. (WWW wrestling not in this category.) Many people were shocked and appalled and felt the networks had gone too far.
This incident seemed to catch a lot of people by surprise. Why? And why is only the exposure incident causing such concern? What about the way the performers were dressed, the way they were dancing, and most importantly, the words being sung? The words to the song, talking about illicit sex, led to the natural consequences of doing what they were talking about in the song. How long do people dress immorally and sing immoral lyrics before they act on it? How long will people allow their children to dress and listen to whatever music or TV they want, yet expect them to be moral?
What we are seeing in our culture is a society that is trying to make our own morals of what is acceptable and what is not, without any ultimate authority. We have rejected any authority above ourselves and we each interpret right in wrong on our own terms. We are our own authority, and if we change our minds, the rules change. What happens to a society like this? Do we evolve into more responsible people, or do we continually get worse?
If we look at man’s long history the answer is obvious. Fallible man cannot make his own rules. Society must be built on laws and mores that do not change with the latest poll. It must look beyond itself to a higher authority that never changes-God. Not our latest interpretation of God, but God in the person of Jesus Christ. Only in Him can people truly change their lives. And those of us who believe in God need to live by his standards and look to His word for guidance. Let’s be vigilant and be active in changing our culture- with God’s help.
