Freshman's Homer Gives Lady Mocs Win Over Dayton posted February 21, 2004 Chattanooga freshman Brittney Whittier became a hero with a fifth inning home run over the left field fence to give Chattanooga a 2-1 win in the Sonic Challenge at Frost Stadium Saturday night. Dayton scored in the first inning when Angie Barney stole second and the throw hit the dirt in front of the bag and ended up in shallow center field. Cassie Gross scored on the error to give the Fliers an early lead. Chattanooga bounced back and scored in back-to-back innings for the win. Melissa Ramirez hit a single up the middle and scored Jeannie Cochran from first in the fourth inning. Whittier led off the fifth with a Freshman Lacey Swarthout, pitching in her second game of the night, struck out six in the remaining three innings and had eight overall and earned her fifth win of the year. The Lady Mocs will play in the two late games taking on Villanova at 4:45 and Virginia in the nightcap at 7:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Frost Stadium. Game 16 - Chattanooga 2, Miami (OH) 1 A walk in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference in Chattanooga's 2-1 win over Miami (OH) at Frost Stadium in the Sonic Challenge Saturday evening. Jeannie Cochran beat out a throw from the third baseman to start the inning and then stole second. Melissa Ramirez had her second hit of the night putting a single into left field and advancing Cochran to third. Leslie Barron drew a walk to load the bases for Stefani Thomas who walked and forced Cochran in for the go-ahead run. Ramirez sent a shot that died at the bottom of the right center wall for an RBI double scoring Teri Herbert from second. The Redhawks answered with a run in the second with an unearned run. Jackie Poggendorf had a double and advanced to third on an error by the centerfielder and scored on a groundout by Jacque Molinaro. Ramirez went 3-3 with an RBI and Herbert had two hits. Lacey Swarthout pitched seven innings and recorded six strikeouts. Miami (OH) 010 000 0 - 1 4 1 Chattanooga 100 010 x - 2 7 2 Game 10 - Villanova 2, Samford 1 *500th career win for Villanova head coach Maria DiBernardi A pair of singles in the third inning gave Villanova just enough room to get past Samford 2-1 for its first win in the Sonic Challenge at Frost Stadium Saturday morning. Ricci Lugo had one of her two hits in the third inning and put the Wildcat's on the board. Kristen Strait stepped up to the plate and sent a liner to left center scoring Lugo and put Villanova up 2-0. Samford's only score came off a home run by Jenna Dempski off Shannon Williams in the fifth inning. Williams struck out six, walked one and gave up three hits. The Bulldog's Emilee Lewis also struck out six and allowed seven hits in the loss. Both teams are 1-2 in the tournament. The win gives Villanova head coach Maria DiBernardi her 500th victory as a head coach. Game 11 - Western Kentucky 3, Miami (Ohio) 1 Western Kentucky rolled past its third opponent in two days with a 3-1 win over Miami of Ohio on Hargraves Field at the Sonic Challenge Saturday morning. The Hilltoppers' Natasha Sevco struck out seven batters, didn't give up a single base on balls and allowed three hits over seven innings of play. In the sixth inning, Riley Garcia scored the first run of the game on a Jackie Poggendorf wild pitch in the sixth inning. A double by Sevco and a single by Hansen in the seventh sent two more runs across the plate for Western Kentucky. The Redhawks' Paz scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh off a double by Garcia, but the Hilltoppers held off the late run to get the win. Western Kentucky is 3-0 in the tournament and the Redhawks are 1-2. Game 12 - Bradley 2, Purdue 0 Bradley mustered two runs over three innings to shut out Purdue 2-0 for its first win at the Sonic Challenge at Frost Stadium and hand the Boilermakers its first loss. The Braves' Stefanie Cheney went 2-3 with two RBIs and Laura Harms was 3-3 with two runs scored. In the fourth inning, Cheney drove in Harms for the go-ahead run in the fourth and knocked an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Harms reached first on a single to right field in the fourth, but the hit was mishandled by the right fielder Angela Knight. Harms advanced and stretched it out sliding in safely under the throw to third. Cheney knocked a double off the right field wall to score Harms to go up 2-0 two innings later. Purdue's Diana LaRiva pitched seven innings for the Boilermakers' and struck out six with no walks. Purdue drops to 2-1 and Bradley is 1-2. Game 13 - Virginia 4, Villanova 2 Virginia held off a seventh inning rally by Villanova to claim a 4-2 victory at Hargraves Field Saturday afternoon in the Sonic Challenge. With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the seventh, Robin Flier hit a double to left center driving in two runs, but two batters later, Ricci Lugo popped out to the left fielder for the final out. The Cavaliers reeled off three runs in the top of the first on two hits, a walk and a hit batsman to go up 3-0. Virginia added an insurance run in the second on a bases loaded walk by Sara Larquier. Virginia is 2-1 in the challenge and Villanova drops to 1-3. Virginia 310 000 0 - 4 7 0 Villanova 000 000 2 - 2 6 0 Game 14 - Western Kentucky 6, Purdue 5 Western Kentucky posted five runs in top of the fifth against Purdue remaining undefeated in the Sonic Challenge with a 6-5 win Saturday afternoon. Purdue scored twice in the first and two more in the third, but the Hilltoppers answered back in strong fashion. With the bases loaded and just one out, pinch hitter Lindsay Gatti was hit by a pitch and Stephanie Young scored to make it 4-1. Jessie Richardson's two-run single put Western Kentucky within striking distance at 4-3, but it was a two-run double from Shelly Floyd that put the Hilltoppers on top for good at 5-4. In the top of the seventh, Western Kentucky added a much needed run from Renita Pennington. Pennington tripled and then scored on a sacrifice fly in foul territory off the bat of Shelly Floyd to give WKU six runs. Purdue tried to make a comeback in their last at bat, but fell short scoring just one run and stranding two runners. Pennington and Floyd each had two hits. Floyd had three RBIs and Richardson was 1-4 with two runs batted in. Purdue's Kristen Schell was 3-4 with two RBIs. The two teams used five pitchers between them recording a total of six strikeouts. Western Kentucky is 4-0 after two days of the Sonic Challenge. Purdue, the only other team to go unbeaten Friday, dropped both games Saturday to go even at 2-2. Western Kentucky 000 050 1 - 6 7 0 Purdue 202 000 1 - 5 8 2 Game 15 - Virginia 7, Samford 1 Virginia struck early to claim a 7-1 win over Samford on Hargraves Field at the Sonic Challenge. With runners at second and third, Lauren Harms reached first on a fielding error by Tami Roudebush and Sarah Mancuso scored to pull the game to within one. Harms beat the pitch-out at second but Bethany Till was caught trying to steal home. Harms was then caught trying to steal third and was thrown out 6-4-5 ending the game. Bradley out hit Dayton 7-3, but a series of errors in the fourth led to three runs for the Fliers. Stefanie Cheney had two hits and one RBI for Bradley and Dayton's Kelly Schreier went 2-3. Bradley has two wins and two losses in the Sonic Challenge and will play Miami-Ohio at 10:00 a.m. at Frost Stadium and Villanova at 2:30 at Hargraves to close out the tournament.
