Chattanooga Funeral Home is planning on building a new chapel on East Brainerd Road.
Gene Pike, president, said the project is subject to zoning approval. The Regional Planning Agency staff is recommending approval. It goes before the Planning Commission next Monday at 1 p.m.
"It will be a first-rate facility," Mr. Pike said.
The location is just past Graysville Road. It is past the Ace Hardware and across from Covenant Presbyterian Church.
A house is now at the site.
Chattanooga Funeral Home had four chapels, then it recently sold the one on McCallie Avenue to Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.
Mr. Pike said, with the new facility, Chattanooga Funeral Home will be back up to four chapels.
The others are Valleyview on Old Lee Highway, North on Highway 153 at Hixson, and East on Moore Road in Brainerd.
Mr. Pike said Valleyview mainly serves residents of Ooltewah and Harrison.
He said, "We are already serving many residents along East Brainerd Road, Ooltewah-Ringgold Road and the Apison areas. This will make it more for convenient for them. We will also be going for the growing North Georgia market."
Heritage Funeral Home is also on East Brainerd Road with a chapel closer to Gunbarrel Road.
Mr. Pike said construction will begin immediately upon granting of zoning approval.
He said Chattanooga Funeral Home's new crematory is doing "far better than expected."
It is located at the Valleyview Chapel and is the only crematory in Hamilton County.
