Stone In Control As Baylor Opens With Baseball Win
Senior Pitcher Throws 68 Strikes In 88 Pitches

MEMPHIS -- Most coaches would be ecstatic if their starting pitcher threw only 88 pitches, including 68 strikes, in a shut-out victory.

Baylor coach Gene Etter, however, is a perfectionist. This is what he had to say about senior right-hander Zane Stone's effort Wednesday morning.

"He was awesome, but he can do better,'' Etter said. "I've seen him better. Some of his strikes were not as well located as I would like.''

Baylor rode the strong pitching of Stone to a 7-0 victory over Harding as the Division II state baseball tournament opened at Christian Brothers University.

The defending state champion Red Raiders (22-16) advanced in the winners bracket portion of the upper bracket. Baylor will play either MBA or SBEC on Thursday at 10 a.m. central at Christian Brothers.

"Short of getting a huge lead and being able to change pitchers, Zane's effort was as well as we could do with our pitching rotation the rest of the way,'' Etter said.

Said Stone, "I like those numbers (88 pitches, 68 strikes). My stuff picked up as I went along. I got some good strike calls and had some great fielding behind me. Caleb Frick (Baylor first-baseman) had a great 3-6-3 that got me out of trouble. And when you have a big lead, you're not afraid to throw strikes.''

Britton Stansell, Logan Simmons and Isaiah Newson had two hits each for Baylor. Stansell and Simmons each had a double and Newson and Simmons each had two RBI. Stansell, Stone and Nick Davis also had RBI for the Red Raiders.

Alex Shelton had two hits for Harding.
