Blue Tornado Meets Memphis CBHS On Thursday

MEMPHIS -- Just like he did when he directed McCallie to a Division II state football championship as its quarterback a few years ago, Ryan Moore knows how to relax his teammates.
After the Blue Tornado experienced a shaky start in the top of the first against Brentwood Academy on Wednesday in the Division II state baseball tournament, Moore came to bat in the bottom of the inning with Austin Jayne on second base.
Facing a 1-2 count, Moore drilled a two-run home run and set the stage for McCallie's impressive 13-7 victory over Brentwood Academy in the tournament opener for both teams.
"He hung a curve,'' Moore said. "I hit it pretty good, but the wind was blowing out.''
Brentwood took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Moore's brother, sophomore Tanner Moore, made an error at shortstop that led to a run.
"We were a little nervous in the first inning,'' Ryan Moore said. "But then we got four in the bottom of the inning. We had 16 hits and nine were extra-base his. That's pretty good.''
McCallie (29-11) will play Memphis Christian Brothers on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at the University of Memphis. CBHS (32-7) beat Father Ryan, 10-0, in its opener and is considered the DII favorite.
Charles Williams pitched six innings for McCallie, giving up four earned runs on nine hits. Matt Olingy pitched the seventh.
"We'll probably pitch Ryan tomorrow,'' McCallie coach Chris Richardson said. "But we've got four very good pitchers. Charles is an excellent pitcher. He does a great job of changing speeds and finding the right location.''
Tanner Moore recovered well from his first-inning error and was 4-for-4 for the Blue Tornado with three runs scored and two RBI.
Jayne was 3-for 5 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.
"On my home run, it was a 3-1 count and he threw me a change-up,'' Jayne said. "Actually, I was looking for it. I'm just glad I got a good swing on it.
"Ryan's home run definitely relaxed us in the first inning, and then we smashed the ball. We've been a completely different team since the start of the region. We're so much more confident, and we have only one goal in mind.''
Ryan Moore was 2-for-3 with four RBI for the Blue Tornado, which has won 11 straight. Ryan Murphy was 2-for-2 while Williams and Michael Kent each had an RBI. Kent had a squeeze bunt for an RBI in the bottom of the sixth
"Those two runs in the bottom of the sixth were big,'' Richardson said. "We actually scored in every inning. We did look a little nervous defensively early, but then we were able to get a big lead.''
Richardson is making his sixth trip to the state baseball tournament. He came as a player for Central in 1984 and '85, for Central as an assistant in '87 and as an assistant at Baylor in '96 and '98.
Brentwood J.P. Wilcher was 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI.
