Collierville Beats Soddy-Daisy Baseball, 12-2, In Five Innings by Stan Crawley posted May 26, 2004 MEMPHIS -- Soddy-Daisy baseball coach Steve Garland and his assistants showed up at the state baseball tournament on Wednesday with their heads shaved. It was something the coaches had promised if the Trojans made it to the Bluff City. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea. Soddy-Daisy played like a weakened Samson and lost to Collierville, 12-2, in a Class AAA opener at Gagliano Field. The Trojans will play in the losers bracket on Thursday morning at 10 against either Halls or McGavock. The game will be played at Gagliano Field again. "We'll bounce back,'' Garland said. "There are a dozen or more teams back in Chattanooga who would love to have a chance to be over here in our situation. We've got one loss, but we're still playing in the state baseball tournament.'' Soddy-Daisy committed four errors against Collierville. "That was on the official book, but I had us with six errors,'' Garland said. "I really don't think we were uptight, but we kicked it around. We only made two errors all last week. "Everything kind of snowballed on us. We may have tightened up as the game went along.'' Collierville pitcher Mike Ashley pitched five innings. He gave up five hits and struck out two in the shortened game. "Give Collierville a lot of credit,'' Garland said. "They're a good team. But we're awfully disappointed with how we played today. We gave them too many freebies.'' John Scruggs and Eric Farrell had two hits each for Collierville. Tyler Boron, Alex Vaughn, Matt Hicks, Derek Bates and Derek Rende each had a single for the Trojans. Vaughn and Bates each had one RBI. Austin Dobbs, the winning pitcher in the sectional for Soddy-Daisy, took the loss. He gave up four hits and nine runs—one earned run—in 2.2 innings. LINESCORE Soddy-Daisy……..001 10 -- 2 5 4 Collierville……….027 12 -- 12 9 0 A.Dobbs, O'Dell (3), Gertz (4) and J. Dobbs; Ashley and Simunic. (E-mail Stan Crawley at wscrawley@earthlink.net) |
