Soddy-Daisy, Grundy Eliminated In State Baseball
posted May 27, 2004

MEMPHIS -- Soddy-Daisy and Grundy County were eliminated from the state baseball tournament on Thursday morning.

In Class AAA, McGavock beat Soddy-Daisy, 5-3, in the losers bracket.

McGavock (25-10) scored two runs in the sixth inning to break at tie at 3.

Tyler Phelps had a solo home run for Soddy-Daisy, which ended its season 28-22. Alex Vaughn had the Trojans' only other hit.

"We just didn't get it done,'' Soddy-Daisy coach Steve Garland said. "We booted it around again today and only had three hits.

"But it was a good experience. We brought 19 players, and 14 of them will be back next year.''

In Class AA, Milan edged Grundy County, 2-0, in the losers bracket.

Grundy, which ended its season 33-9, got only two hits in its loss. Grundy pitcher Josh Sitz gave up only five hits in a losing cause, and finished the year 8-2.

Grundy finished the state tournament at 2-2, losing both games to the strong Milan team.
