"Smart Card" Could Be Future Ticket All Around Town
CARTA Launches Use Of Automated System At Incline
posted June 17, 2004

CARTA is launching use of an automated system for buying tickets at the Incline Railway, and officials said it could eventually lead to a "Smart Card" good for a variety of services and attractions all over town.

Bob Nugent, CARTA director of planning, said when the tourist season opens next year there will no longer be human ticket takers at the St. Elmo and top of the mountain stations. He said they will be replaced by machines.

Mr. Nugent said the machines will accept either cash or credit cards for a ride up Lookout Mountain on the historic Incline.

CARTA officials said they also may set up a similar system downtown for purchase of tickets to ride CARTA buses.

Tom Dugan, CARTA executive director, said CARTA officials are in the early stages of talking with leaders of area attractions about the advantages of such "Smart Cards."

He said eventually citizens may acquire the cards which would allow you to ride the Incline, ride a CARTA bus and park in a CARTA parking garage, but also might get you in Ruby Falls or the Aquarium and a stay at a local hotel.

Mr. Dugan said the card would be a very handy item for a visitor to Chattanooga.

There will be two automated machines set up at both the top and bottom of the Incline route.

Officials said no current Incline employees will be displaced, but be given other duties.

The system should be in place next April or May.
