Redoubt U-16 Futbol Club Wins Cocoa Championship
posted January 2, 2005

The U-16 Redoubt Lady Futbol Club traveled to Florida over the Christmas break and came back champions of the U-16 Women’s division of the Cocoa Expo Soccer Showcase Tournament. Redoubt played six games in four days winning all six. The tournament featured teams from as far away as Africa and South America. The Redoubt team played teams from New York, New Jersey, and Florida on its way to the championship.

In the first game Jaimee Cooper (Notre Dame) started the scoring with two early goals. Lyndsey Almon (Franklin Road Academy) and Christin Moss (Grace) also netted goals in the 4 – 1 win over the Mega Fusion. Outside midfielders Kendra Wills (FRA) and Lauren Hammond (GPS) kept the pressure on the Fusion defense with Lauren recording an assist in the match.

In the second game Redoubt’s Brittany Brown (Baylor) recorded the only hat trick of the tournament while Lyndsey Almon added two more goals in the 5 – 2 victory over one of the New York teams.

Game three saw a tenacious defense from both teams as Redoubt was only able to score one goal late in the first half on a Christin Moss shot off an assist from Brittany Brown. Redoubt got two goals in the late second half from Jaimee Cooper and Kate Woodard (FRA) before allowing a PK goal as time expired in a 3-1 victory.

In the final game of round-robin play the defense posted its first shutout of the tournament against the Jersey Knights in a 3 – 0 win. The defensive backs Catherine Turner (Centennial), Elizabeth Ockerman (University School of Nashville), Ashleigh Miller (Red Bank), and Annie Bullard (Baylor) along with Goal Keepers Ginny Henry (GPS) and Kate Woodard thwarted every offensive attack the Knights tried to muster. Jennifer Clemmer (Baylor) scored her first goal of the tournament and Lyndsey Almon added two more to her tournament high of five goals scored.

With victories in all four of its round-robin games Redoubt entered the final round seeded #1. The semi-final game against the Massapequa Invasion resulted in a football-like score of 7 – 3 as five different players scored for Redoubt. Fritsl Bulter (Baylor) began the scoring on-slaught with a header off a corner kick from Clemmer. Clemmer would later add two goals of her own as would Jaimee Cooper who ended up tied with Almon at five goals for the tournament. Ashleigh Miller and Christin Moss also scored as Redoubt advanced to the tournament finals. For the tournament Moss had five assists and Clemmer had four to lead Redoubt in that category.

In the finals Redoubt met the Allentown Lady Spirit, state cup finalists from New York. The match was a defensive struggle as the NY team played with eight players in the defensive third most of the game. The defense turned in another sterling performance while achieving their second shutout of the tournament. While Redoubt controlled the ball for most of match they were not able to punch in a goal until the 77th minute when Fritsl Butler’s 25 yarder sailed just over the out-stretched hands of the Lady Spirit keeper to seal the championship.

Redoubt’s U-16 team is a premier level team drawing some of the top players from across the state. Ten players and head coach Curtis Blair (Ooltewah) were recently involved in the high school state soccer tournament with eight players playing for state champions – Baylor and FRA. The Redoubt roster includes Lyndsey Almon, Kendra Wills, Kate Woodard, Elizabeth Ockerman, and Catherine Turner from the Nashville area. Two Cleveland residents, Christin Moss and Erica Scoggins (Baylor) are members of the team although Erica was not able to make this trip due to an illness. Finally the Chattanooga area players are Brittany Brown, Annie Bullard, Fritsl Butler, Jennifer Clemmer, Jaimee Cooper, Lauren Hammond, Ginny Henry, and Ashleigh Miller. Redoubt’s next games will be Premier League action in February against Oklahoma teams in Little Rock, Arkansas.
