Joshua Smith Case Bound To Grand Jury posted January 4, 2005 A former student at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences charged with breaking into a school office and getting information on eight male students who had allegedly flirted with his girl friend had his cases bound to the Grand Jury. Joshua Conrad Smith, of Maple Lane, faces charges of burglary, theft and possession of unlawful weapons. He appeared Tuesday morning before General Sessions Court Judge Ron Durby. Jerry Sloan, attorney for Smith, said he is now a student at UTC, though he still has a girlfriend at CSAS. He said a condition of his remaining on bond is that he not go on the CSAS campus and that he not go to any school functions, including away sports events. Judge Durby told Smith, "This is a serious case. You could compound it drastically by your actions." He said if he got into any more trouble that his bond could be revoked. Police said they found five collector knives and a box cutter in Smith's vehicle at CSAS. County school officials said, "On Monday afternoon, CSAS officials discovered the student had personal information regarding eight other Polmale students. At this point, a police officer was called to the school. Upon searching the student, the police officer discovered several keys belonging to CSAS. "The police officer also searched the student’s car, which was on campus, and discovered a set of collectors’ knives. The student was then placed under arrest. "CSAS Principal Steve Ball has recommended the student be expelled for one calendar year under the district’s zero tolerance policy, which is also a part of state and federal law. The student has the right to appeal the administration’s decision. "CSAS officials notified the eight students and their parents about this incident on Monday evening. The student who was arrested did not make any verbal or written threats against these eight males, according to police. "Hamilton County school officials will continue to investigate this incident." |
