Lee Drops Conference Decisions At Brewton-Parker posted February 4, 2005 MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Lee Flames' move up the standings came to a halt at Brewton-Parker in a 77-65 loss on Thursday night. The Lee men had won two conference games in a row to even their record at 6-6 in conference play, but the loss dropped them into seventh place in the 12-team league. The Flames were down most of the game, although they drew even during a strong rally in the second half. However, they could not stop the hot-shooting Barons, who hit 51 percent of their shots for the game. More importantly, the Barons made an almost unheard of 52 percent on 3-pointers, shooting 23 and making 12. The Lee men had solid efforts from Cori Pugh and Kierren Lovick. Pugh shot 71 percent and put up 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Lovick added 12 markers, six boards, and a pair of steals. Rob Giesey had four assists. Lovick went down with an ankle injury during a Lee surge in the second half. He returned briefly, but was not the same. BPC forced 23 turnovers and committed 20. The Flames did win the rebounding battle, 33-26, including 11 offensive boards. "Our shot selection was not good and we did not contest 19 of the 45 shots they made," said coach Rick Hughes. "You are not going to win many games with that type of combination." The Barons received a complete-team effort, with 10 players scoring. Leading the way was Tre Hill with 23. He was an extraordinary 7-of-8 from the field, and hit all four 3-pointers he attempted. Tylson Boyd had 20 on five shots made from behind the arc. Ben McGlynn collected nine points and four assists. Lee drops to 11-9, 6-7 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. The Barons improve their record to 14-11, 6-9. They have won three in a row. In the womens' game, a pressing full-court defense and amazing quickness proved to be the difference in Lee University's 76-66 defeat to host Brewton-Parker. The visiting Lady Flames came out strong against the NAIA's No. 9 ranked Lady Barons, going up by as much as 11 in the first half. As expected, Brewton-Parker rallied back and when the halftime break came, Lee was down 33-30. However, the speedy Mount Vernon, Ga.-based club took control in the second half, forcing a large number of Lee turnovers. For the game, the Lady Barons amassed an amazing 21 steals and 37 turnovers. Tamika Drinks was impressive in this department, collecting eight steals. She nearly had a triple-double for the game, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds as well. Several Lady Flames had good games, led by Jan Dodson. She put 15 points on the board and had seven rebounds and only two turnovers. Jessica Still came off the bench to hit three of four 3-pointers and posted 11 points. Heidi Rominger had nine points, seven boards, and four assists. Stacey Felchner tallied nine points and seven rebounds and Heidi Hamilton came off the bench to hit four free throws to total eight points. The Lady Flames shot well from the field, hitting 48 percent of their shots, including 38 percent from behind the arc. They were 8-of-10 at the charity stripe. Lee Assistant Coach Mindy Kiser noted, “They really outplayed us on the fast break, outscoring us 18-0. Normally we are the ones running up and down the court, but they took our game away from us. We did not take care of the ball like we should have.” She added, “The turnovers made a huge difference, as did the fouls. We put them in a position to hit a lot of free throws and they did. In addition, we were weak in the paint tonight, which is a big part of our game.” BPC had several players with notable efforts, led by Ashley Little. She had 20 points and four steals. Tori Williams had 13 points, while Crystal McNeil had 12 points and five blocks. Trivia Richardson had eight points, eight boards, six assists, and three steals. Brewton-Parker shot only 42 percent, including an abysmal 13 percent on 23 3-pointers, but hit 19 free throws. The Lady Flames get Saturday off, then hit the road on Monday for another Southern States match-up, this time with Auburn-Montgomery. “The next few games will be tough added Kiser. "We really need to get a win at AUM, but we know that is a tough place to play. The girls want to get back on the winning side after this tough loss.” Brewton-Parker ups their record to 24-1 and 12-1 in SSAC play. The Lady Flames drop to 18-7, 8-5. |
