Shuptrine, Bright Honored With Governor's Awards In The Arts posted March 22, 2005
In the Arts. The Tennessee Arts Commission sponsored the 2005 Governor’s Awards at the BellSouth Auditorium in Nashville. Gov. Phil Bredesen and First Lady Andrea Conte presided over the event. Allied Arts Executive Director, Don Andrews, and Allied Arts Director of Grant Programs, Marilyn Harrison, attended. Also from Chattanooga attending were Jeanine Alday, Susu Brock and Bob Willie, managing director of the Chattanooga Ballet. The Tennessee Arts Commission established the Governor’s Awards in the Arts in 1971 to recognize individuals and organizations that make outstanding contributions to the cultural life of Tennessee. The contribution may be as an artist, patron of the arts, a private sector organization that supports the arts, achievement in arts education, artistic community involvement or for a unique arts achievement. These awards are Tennessee’s highest honor in the arts. The Arts Leadership Award recipients were, Judy Woodruff and Richard Ranta. The Distinguished Artist Award was awarded to Booker T. & the MG’s, Chattanooga artist Hubert Shuptrine, and internationally recording artist Isaac Hayes. Receiving the Folklife Heritage Award as Charlie Acuff and Chattanooga’s Fletcher Bright. State Rep. John Hood served as Master of Ceremonies while Nancy DeFriece of the Tennessee Arts Commission welcomed the guests.
