I read Gerry Spence's commentary with great interest and appreciation.
Tort reformers claim that medical malpractice lawsuits are the root of the doctors' problem, which is high medical malpractice insurance premiums. Study after study has revealed that is not the case.
Insurers are part of the problem, but the root of the problem is medical malpractice. Doctors have a professional responsibility to address that problem, but they continue to hide behind that white wall of silence, enabling bad doctors to continue practicing medicine, resulting in thousands of unnecessary deaths each year and the maiming of thousands of other patients, whose lives are truncated by medical malpractice.
The Hippocratic Oath offers excellent advice: First do no harm. Far too many doctors seem to be adhering to another oath: First protect your assets.
Doctors flaunting their white coats as they lobby for tort reform has become ironic for those of us who take the time to research what is happening in the medical profession.
If doctors want to regain the respect they once enjoyed, they should follow the Hippocratic Oath and remove from their profession those doctors who don't follow it.
