The board of directors of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga is pleased to announce the appointment of Jan Varnell as its new executive director.

Varnell brings an extensive background of volunteer service with two Chattanooga organizations to her new role at Habitat. Since 1988 she has served Children’s International Summer Villages in roles ranging from board president, board member and newsletter editor to development and publicity committee member.

In addition, Varnell has also been active with the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Chattanooga since 1998. Her roles have included service as a board member, board president, development chairperson and grantwriter. She currently serves as a Congregation Volunteer Coordinator at Rivermont Presbyterian Church.

Varnell also has 25 years experience in the insurance industry, with Provident, HealthSource, and most recently as a Senior Training Consultant with CIGNA HealthCare in Chattanooga.

“I feel honored and privileged to be asked to fill this position,” says Varnell. “I’m looking forward to great things for this ministry and our community.” “Habitat is pleased to have someone with Jan’s knowledge and experience serve as its executive director,” says Shawn McKay, board president. “She brings enthusiasm and a passion for providing decent, affordable housing to the citizens of Chattanooga as Habitat begins its 20th year of service to this community.”

Since 1986, Habitat has helped more than 170 Chattanooga families enjoy the benefits of homeownership. Habitat’s zero interest loans and its homeowner education programs give its partner families a hand up, not a handout.
