Smoke Alarm Saves Life In Morning House Fire
posted May 4, 2005

A smoke alarm is credited with saving the life of an elderly Chattanooga man Wednesday morning.

Tyler Russell, 75, said he was sound asleep in his back bedroom when his smoke alarm woke him up. His bedroom was already filling with smoke when he hastily threw some clothes on, got out of the house, and called 911.

Mr. Russell said other family members who lived there, including his wife, a grandson and granddaughter, were not home at the time of the fire.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 9:44 a.m. and responded to 3103 Mary Walker Place with several engine companies. Captain Ken Moses said the firefighters quickly attacked the fire inside the house, in a front bedroom, and had the blaze out in five to ten minutes.

Captain Moses said the fire damage was contained to the one bedroom, but there was smoke damage to the rest of the house. The dollar loss was estimated at around $25,000.

Captain Craig Haney with the Fire Investigation Division said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, most likely from an electrical malfunction.
