This week Panera Bread presented Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga, Inc. with $1,200 dollars in gift cards, which will be used to help feed volunteers at the construction sites.

For the past 13 years, Panera has participated in Operation Dough-Nation, a program that ensures that every purchase at Panera Bread feeds back into the community. Operation Dough-Nation contributes to the local community in several ways. All cash donations made in special containers near the registers are matched with freshly baked bread or cash for distribution to local charities, such as Habitat for Humanity. At the end of the day, every local Panera Bread bakery-cafe delivers all unsold bread to local hunger relief agencies, including Second Harvest Foodbank.

“We are proud to share ‘Panera warmth’ with members of our local community throughout the year,” said Tom Krings. “Bread is an important part of our culture – it brings people together – and Panera is dedicated to giving back to the people who have welcomed us into their neighborhoods and invited us to share in their lives.”

Nationwide, Panera Bread bakery-cafes have helped dozens of non-profit organizations through Operation Dough-Nation. Thanks to the generosity of its customers, Panera Bread was able to donate more than $1 million to numerous charities last year. Contributions have helped organizations including local food banks and pantries, Meals on Wheels, Make a Wish Foundation, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and many others. Last year, Panera Bread bakery-cafes nationwide donated more than $12 million worth of bread products to non-profits served by Second Harvest, the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization.
