An electrical malfunction appears to be the cause of a fire that broke out at The Bag on Hixson Pike on Thursday night.

Captain James Whitmire with the Fire Investigation Division said the fire appears to have started above a drop ceiling, toward the rear of the building. The dollar loss was estimated at around $70,000 for damages to the building and its contents.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 7:49 p.m. and responded to 3878 Hixson Pike with six fire companies. Captain Jimmy Spurling said thick, black smoke was showing from the rear of the structure when the first firefighters arrived. Captain Spurling said the firefighters were initially told that someone might be inside. The firefighters forced their way inside, conducted a search of the building, but found no one.

Meanwhile, other firefighters managed to get the blaze under control in 15 to 20 minutes, containing the fire damage to the back of the building. Captain Spurling said there was smoke, heat and water damage to the rest of the building. No injuries were reported.
