Fire Destroys East Chattanooga House posted June 13, 2005
The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 5:17 a.m. and responded to 2213 Davenport St. with four fire companies. Battalion Chief Winston Shields said the house was fully engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived on the scene. The firefighters were initially told by neighbors that someone might still be inside the burning structure, but no one was found. Chief Shields said the firefighters concentrated their efforts on containing the fire, and protecting the two houses next door. The owner and resident of the house, Elizabeth Benton, 64, was reportedly at work at the time of the fire. The house was considered a total loss, with the dollar loss estimated at around $80,000. The American Red Cross was called in to provide assistance to the victim. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental. Captain Craig Haney with the Fire Investigation Division said the fire appears to have started in the vicinity of a stove, and can probably be attributed to a pot being left unattended on a hot burner, officials said.
