GOP Says Bredesen "Should Clean Up His Own Act First"
posted June 13, 2005

When considering calling an ethics special session, Gov. Phil Bredesen "should heed his own words in April when he said lawmakers should work on legislation themselves and that he would not tell legislators what to do on ethics issues," state Republican Party Chairman Bob Davis said.

The GOP chairman said, "Instead, the governor should be concerned about his own administration and its ethical challenges before calling a special legislative session on ethics.

"Shredding documents, sexual harassment cases, and Governor Bredesen’s own dealings with Sen. John Ford cause enough concern that the governor should clean up his own house before calling a special session. In fact, Gov. Bredesen should answer fully the questions recently posed by State Rep. Glenn Casada concerning the governor’s dealings with Senator Ford and TennCare vendors."

On June 9, Rep. Casada, a member of the House Republican leadership, sent a letter asking Gov. Bredesen to provide all contacts between himself, the Bredesen administration, Sen. Ford, and two TennCare vendors seeking business with the state.

"It is my hope Gov. Bredesen will take this request by Rep. Casada seriously. After addressing this and the other issues surrounding his administration, then it may be more appropriate for the governor to call a special session on ethics," said Mr. Davis.

In addition to the Ford issue, Gov. Bredesen’s administration has been accused of shredding documents in a sexual harassment case and keeping faulty records on other such incidents, the GOP chairman said.
