Police Blotter: Man Nabbed After Jewelry Theft On Brainerd Road
posted June 15, 2005

Officers Tyrone Williams Jr. and George Walden arrested a man for allegedly stealing jewelry from Rone Regency Jewelers on Brainerd Road.

Police said they received a BOLO of the suspect vehicle, and it was located at Old Mission Road and N. Moore Road. Victor M. Owens was taken into custody after police found a 14-karat gold woman's watch under the driver's seat.

The officers said they viewed the store surveillance tape and it showed Owens taking several pieces of jewelry from an unlocked case.

An employee said Owens came in asking about a necklace and waited until everyone was distracted before taking the items.

Bob Mason said he ran outside and wrote down the tag number before the suspect got away.

Also taken were a gold woman's watch with diamonds and a diamond pendant. Police were not able to recover those items.

Owens was taken to the County Jail and charged with theft. He was also served with an outstanding warrant.

April Stewart said she was sitting in her car at the Conoco on Dodds Avenue talking to a friend when a bald black male wearing a red, plaid, button down shirt and a pair of jeans walked up to her driver's side window. She said he leaned inside and snatched her 10-karat gold rope chain.

She said the man left in a white Ford Ranger with partial tag JWT.

A female clerk at a store at 6003 Shallowford Road said a white male entered the store and asked if she was alone. She said she responded, "Always."

She said the man then approached the counter with his hand in his pocket as though it were a gun. She said she could tell it was only his hand.

The clerk said the man ordered her to open the register and give her all the money "and two cartons of Marlboro Reds." She said she told him No, and he said, "You got family, don't you?" She said he started to come around the counter, and she told him he had better not. She said he became agitated and ran out.

He left in a white, early to mid-1990s Ford Thunderbird. He was 5'8", 280 pounds, clean shaven with dark hair.

Police said the incident was caught on video.

The same clerk said a black male entered the store and asked for Goody's headache powders. She said she then saw him pick up two boxes of Goody's and stuff them into his pants.

He told her, "Go ahead and call the Police, baby."

The man got into a green Ford Taurus with a tag that was traced to a red Chevy from Memphis.

Steve Price said he had just left the Kangaroo store on Dallas Road in his vehicle when he encountered several black males walking along the same road. He said two of the men stepped into the road, causing him to stop. He said three other men came up to the vehicle and pulled him out. He said they began hitting and punching him and one hit him with a stick.

He claimed the men then took off in his vehicle.

Police said he had a small abrasion on his cheek.

Cliff Dockery said someone broke into his pawn ship on Glass Street and took approximately $2,500 in assorted jewelry from an unlocked safe in the back of the store.

He said the burglar got in through a hole in the roof.

A man said he was sitting at the stop light at E. Third Street and Willow Street when a man came up to his car and punched him through the open window. He said the man tried to fight him before going back to his white truck cab.

He said the suspect is his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.

Police said the man had a knot on his left temple.

Willis Burse said he left his wallet on a CARTA bus. He said he asked the driver later if he had seen his wallet, and the driver said he had given it to another man who asked him, "Can I have my wallet?"

Mr. Burse said the wallet included his ID card, credit cards and a security card that grants access to his apartment.

Adam Herring said his car broke down while he was on his way to Florida, and he wound up getting his clothes and his dog stolen.

He said he and his friend, Corey Wehunt, were trying to get the car started when two black males drove up in a gray Lincoln and offered assistance. They were unable to get it started, and the black males offered them a ride to the nearest store.

They went to the Eastside Market on Fourth Avenue. The black males told Mr. Herring to go inside and get something to drink. When Mr. Herring and Mr. Wehunt went in, the black males drove off with Mr. Herring's clothes and brown Pitbull puppy - worth $800.

Mr. Wehunt left before police arrived, telling Mr. Herring he was going on to Florida.

Vanity Garmany said her home on Camden Street was burglarized. She said someone apparently got in through a hole in the wall designed to hold an air conditioner.

Gone were an RCA stereo, a 19" color TV, a DVD/VCR, a black pistol, and a 14-carat white gold diamond ring.

She said the thief left a copy of the Sunday paper on her bed.

A resident of Booth Road said someone entered his bedroom through an unlocked window. They took $800 in cash and a DVD player.

The resident said he believes it is the same person who broke into his home two days earlier.

Officials of Target on Gunbarrel Road said Anne Swafford hid various items worth $196.81 and tried to leave the store without paying. She was cited for theft under $500.

A woman on Sunrise Lane complained about a man she says takes off his clothes and walks around naked while yelling and talking to her.

She said the man disrobes and stands on a hill under a street light.

Police told the woman to call back when it happens again.
