A vacant house on Milne Street burned early Thursday morning.

Chattanooga firefighters responded to the scene of the house fire around 4:30 a.m. at 2204 Milne.

Captain Marvin Hudgins with Engine 4 said flames were showing from a window in the middle of the house when they arrived on the scene, and it was evident the fire had been going for some time.

“When we opened the front door to make an interior attack, flames were rolling out the door as we made our way in,” said Captain Hudgins. The flames worked their way into the attic, but the firefighters eventually got the blaze under control.

Captain James Whitmire with the Fire Investigation Division said the house had been vacant for some time, but was known to be a haven for vagrants and other individuals. Captain Whitmire said those people are most likely responsible for starting the fire. Whether it was started intentionally or accidentally remains undetermined at this time.

No injuries were reported. The dollar loss was estimated at around $35,000.
