Air Pollution Code Orange Expected For Saturday
posted June 24, 2005

An air pollution health watch has been declared for Saturday, June 25. Sunday June, 26, is predicted to be 100, which is in the Moderate range. Unusually sensitive people should consider limiting prolonged or heavy exertion on Sunday.

Saturday, June 25, is forecast to be a Code Orange day (122 on AQI index). Levels of pollution are expected to be Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. People at risk include: children who are active outdoors; adults of all ages exercising or working outdoors; people with asthma or other respiratory conditions; and people with unusual susceptibility to air pollution.

Air pollution levels can vary throughout the day. Reduce exposure to pollution by: planning strenuous activity when pollution levels are forecast to be lower; reducing the amount of time spent at vigorous activity; and choosing a less strenuous activity (e.g., going for a walk instead of a jog).

Over half of the population is at risk. Please limit prolonged outdoor exertion.

Pollution-reducing suggestions:

Reduce Fuel Use:
Drive less by combining errands
Keep your engines properly tuned. The emissions from one untuned car equal those from 25 properly maintained cars
Keep tires properly inflated
Refuel after 6 p.m.
Don’t top off tank

Reduce Energy Consumption:
Turn off lights
Turn thermostats up 2-4 degrees
Keep blinds drawn to block out sun

Find Alternate Methods of Transportation:
Walk or bike (before noon and after 6:00 p.m.)
Use public transportation
Carpool
Van pool

Burn only on days when open burning is allowed. Seasonal open burning ban in effect May 1 – Sept. 30
