I Do Not Understand Iraq Critics
posted July 5, 2005

I do not understand why a few Republicans and Liberals call for a timetable for withdrawing from Iraq. We are at war and they want to give the enemy our war plans? I do not need a history lesson to know what giving aid and comfort to your enemies will do. Theodore Roosevelt said to walk softly and carry a big stick. He also knew if one shook that stick soon enough you might not have to swing it in anger. He did not call for bluffing while holding that big stick. When it needed to be swung, it was to be swung with all your strength.

I do not understand why we do not hear condemnation of our enemy when they kill non-combatant men, women and children. This same group uses every opportunity to condemn our military when combat results in the death of non-combatant’s. It is a sad but true fact that war is about killing. Sadly, some innocents who favor our cause will die. When fractions of seconds may mean the difference between life and death, do we ask our young warriors to take extra time to make sure their return fire hits only combatants when both are dressed alike?

I remember the howl by the news media when an American tank in Baghdad killed two media members on top of a building. The media felt the tank crew should have made sure the individuals on top of a building was aiming a camera, not a mobile rocket launcher or directing fire toward the tank. In war, where it is kill or be killed, our military should take the time to make sure someone in a combat zone that is acting like the enemy is the enemy?

While England’s Navel Chamberlain talked, Adolf Hitler built his military in violation of treaties before the beginning of WWII. When Chamberlain agreed to give Germany what amounted to a country that did not belong to either in hopes of preventing war, Hitler prepared to wage war. It took years for freedom loving nations to stand up and say enough is enough. In the end the only option left to settle the issue was an all out war to the death.

England and the United States were powers of the world in the early thirties. Had either or both stood up to the enemies of freedom and peace during the 30’s, the millions of lives lost during WWII may have been saved.

We are seeing politicians and news media once again trying to control military combat situations. The politicians talked during the Korean Conflict and set limitations on the militaries ability to wage a war they had authorized. The results were a loss of half a freedom loving country to a government totally opposed to human rights. Our military was withdrawn due to a lack of political resolve. American lives were lost due to a lack of political resolve. Politicians and media blamed the wars loss on the military.

In the 60’s our politicians sent our military to Vietnam while limiting their ability to wage an approved war. Once again we went to the so-called peace table and lost a portion of a country for a peace loving people. Once again American lives were lost due to a lack of political resolve. Once again our politicians and media blamed our military for the lose.

In 1991 the small country of Kuwait was invaded by Saddam Hussein. We told Iraq to get out, they did not and we allowed our military to wage war without direct political interference. Our military won a war and came home as the heroes they were.

Once again in 2001 enemies of freedom loving people of the world declared war. Once again men, women and children were killed when radicals declared war on anyone unwilling to accept their mandate or anyone who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Once again certain members of our political and media are calling for taking the control of the decision making for war from our trained military.

Once again they want to talk after the enemy has taken military action. History has proven that there are individuals and groups who care nothing about their fellow man. They will enslave or kill all who oppose their goals.

I do not understand. After being fired on first, why would certain members of our society seek peace by appeasement? We are at war, winning should be the only objective. History has proven that point many times.

A quote by Albert Einstein sums up why we, the people of the United States, must take this war to those who attacked us. I quote him: "The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
