Pregnant Woman Let Out Of Jail To Have Baby Gets New Prostitution Charge
posted July 11, 2005

A woman who county workhouse officials arranged to get released because she was about to have a baby was soon back behind bars - again on prostitution charges.

The state is now asking that probation be revoked for 27-year-old Leslie M. Haynes, who was one of four women caught in a prostitution sting on Thursday evening.

Tommy Standifer of county corrections said, "We asked Judge Bob Moon to let her out early so she could have the baby. Then she beat me back to the workhouse.

"I left Thursday afternoon before she was released. When I got in Friday morning, they told me, 'You'll never believe who is here.' When they told me, I said, 'You're kidding.'"

He said Ms. Haynes will be taken to Erlanger Medical Center to have the child. The baby could go to relatives. If, however, the mother has no relatives to take the child, the baby will become a ward of the state.

Asked if he was surprised that the 9-month pregnant woman was allegedly out on the street again as a prostitute, Mr. Standifer said, "Nothing surprises me in this day and age."

Judge Moon commented, "The state of Tennessee has filed an immediate petition to revoke Ms. Haynes' previous suspended sentence. I cannot ethically comment on her new charges.

"Obviously, the unborn child is my priority of most concern. No child should ever have to be born in the workhouse.

"With parents like this, it is easy to understand why the United States leads the world in the suicide of children under the age of 18. This child is so innocently disadvantaged even before its birth."
