Police Blotter: Man Caught After Kicks In Door During Burglary
posted July 21, 2005

A burglary arrest was made after a man kicked in a door and found, to his surprise, that the homeowner was on the premises.

Phyllis Dunning said she heard someone knocking on her door at a duplex on Wheeler Avenue and went down the hall to answer. She said before she could get there a black male kicked in the door. She said the door was still on the hinges, but the door frame was damaged.

She said when the man saw her he said a curse word, then ran east toward N. Chamberlain Avenue.

She said she had never seen the man before. He was 6', 180 pounds, wearing a blue jersey shirt with white numbers, black jeans and a stocking cap.

Officer Jason Whittemore spotted the man matching the description of the one who had kicked in the door on Wheeler Avenue. He detained the man, then took him to the residence where he was positively identified.

Demetrius Jones was charged with attempted burglary.

Daniel Grasiano-Ortiz said he was pumping gas at the Conoco on E. Main Street, then he noticed a cream-colored 1980s Ford Crown Victoria following him as he drove off.

He said the vehicle followed him to his home on E. Main. He said he was accosted by three black males in an alley behind his home.

He said two of the men began hitting him with their fists, causing deep cuts on his face. The third man was going through his pockets and made him take his pants off.

The men fled with the pants back to their car, then they took off.

The victim said the only thing taken were the keys to his car and house.

Police found the pants, which still had his wallet with the money still in it.

An ambulance took the victim to Erlanger Medical Center.

Santiago Gomez said she was walking west in the 1600 block of Duncan Avenue when a black male approached her and grabbed her purse, which was wrapped around her shoulder and neck.

She said during the struggle, the man grabbed her hair and punched her in the jaw. She said the strap broke away from the purse.

The man took the purse and ran east on Duncan Avenue with it. It had $650 cash in it.

The thief was described as 5'10"-6', skinny, dark complected with a white shirt and tan shorts.

Kevin Lyles said he woke up at his apartment on Mountain Creek Road and found a white male in his room stealing his medication.

He said he chased the man, but lost sight of him. He said the man was driving a blue Dodge Neon.

Judy Kay Mincey said several white males in a black Jeep drove through her chain link fence. They then kicked in a white storm door. She said they were looking for someone at the residence on S. Orchard Knob. Property damage was around $300.

Anna Saxton of S. Holly Street said her boyfriend, Henry Island, hit her and choked her because she talked to another man.

Island denied the assertion, but he was charged with domestic assault. He had some scratches on his arms, and Ms. Saxton was bleeding from the lip.

A window was broken out at 500 N. Highland Park Ave. Police said it would cost $500 to replace.

Also, a window was knocked out at Comprehensive Community Care at 1914 McCallie Ave. Someone went through several drawers, but it did not appear anything was missing.

Cary Humble, owner of Humble Treasures on Highway 58, said someone stole $400 worth of clothing from outside the store on the sidewalk.

She said a black male had been looking at the clothing while she was helping other customers.

A dispatcher said James Petty was talking to her about suicide when she heard a gunshot and the phone went dead. Police went to Adkins Road and found Petty standing in his living room on the phone. He admitted to firing the .45-caliber handgun off his back porch.

Petty was handcuffed and taken into custody. Police said he is a convicted felon and the gun was stolen. They also found marijuana, scales and rolling papers.

Hector Cano and Elisa Rush said they were washing their clothes at the Covenant Motel laundry when someone stole the clothes.

A witness said a tall black woman with maroon streaks took them.

A Mountain Creek Road woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital after she drank six beers and had a shot of Wild Turkey along with her medication.
