posted August 8, 2005

Lou Ann Johnson, author of Dangerous Minds, adapted into a 1995 major motion picture, spoke to teachers from three Hamilton County magnet high schools Monday at 9:30 a.m. in Tyner Academy's auditorium.

She addressed faculty members from Brainerd High School, Howard School of Academics and Technology, and Tyner Academy of Math, Science and Technology. These three schools are Hamilton County's most recent recipients of the Magnet Schools of America Program's grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

All three high schools will open this fall with specialized career academies for grades 10-12 as well as a preparatory Freshman Academy.

Brainerd High School offers classes in an Arts, Communications, and Education Academy (ACE) and Industry, Technology and Business Systems (ITBS Academy). Classes unique to the ACE Academy include Legal and Protective Services and Allied Health. ITBS Academy uniquely offers Travel, Tourism, and Hospitality, as well as the Culinary Arts.

Howard School of Academics and Technology provides students a choice of three academies: Health Science and Human Services, Multimedia and Informational Technology, and Engineering and Construction Technology. Programs unique to Howard include Early-Childhood Education and Residential Architecture and Design.

Tyner Academy of Math, Science and Technology allows students three choices of study: Communication Academy, Science Academy, and Engineering Academy. Tyner has state-of the art equipment in all of its academies and offers certification in several information service and engineering fields.
