Covenant College will hold its opening convocation activities on Friday, Aug. 26.
Though an annual event, convocation carries special significance this year as Covenant celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. All are cordially invited to participate in the following convocation activities.
The traditional convocation service, complete with bagpipe processional and faculty attired in full academic regalia, will be held at 11 a.m. Dr. Reg McLelland, professor of philosophy, will be speaking.
The afternoon presents two opportunities for the Covenant community and guests. At 2 p.m., Mr. Mark Gornik '84, will speak on "God's Peace for God's World: Gifts and Challenges of Reformed Learning." Mr. Gornik is director of the City Seminary of New York and is a PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh.
At 3:30 p.m., Dr. Will Barker will present a lecture entitled, "No Human Could Plan It This Way: The Future History of Covenant College." Dr. Barker is an adjunct professor of church history at Covenant Theological Seminary, a former Covenant College professor of history and dean of faculty, and an emeritus professor at Westminster Seminary. He recently authored a book recounting the half-century history of Covenant College entitled, "In All Things...": The Preeminence of Christ in the History of Covenant College 1955-2005.
At 6 p.m. will be a convocation picnic on the lawn for students, alumni, faculty, staff, and their families. Cost is $7.50 per person. To reserve a spot, please contact Susan Cardwell at scardwell@covenant.edu or (706) 419-1117.
Finally at 7:30 p.m., there will be musical entertainment by the bluegrass band, The Dismembered Tennesseans.
All events will be held in the Dora Maclellan Brown Memorial Chapel on Covenant's campus. Everyone is invited to attend.
