Some Apartments Drenched After St. Barnabas Fire posted September 20, 2005 Fire forced the partial evacuation of the St. Barnabas nursing home facility Monday night. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 9:05 p.m. and responded to 300 W. 6th St. with several fire companies. Battalion Chief Mack Moore said the firefighters were initially told that there was a fire on the 10th floor and that some residents were trapped. Chattanooga firefighters quickly made their way up to the 10th floor, and immediately began assisting residents down the stairs and out of the building. The apartment that had the fire was located, but the fire had already been extinguished by the sprinkler system. No one was trapped, and no injuries were reported. However, the sprinkler system did leave approximately 11 apartment units drenched with water. St. Barnabas staff made arrangements with the nearby Clarion Hotel to house the displaced residents for the night, while efforts are made to remove the water and dry out the apartments. Chief Moore said the fire was started by a box of cereal left on top of a stove burner. The sprinkler system put the fire out before it could cause much damage. |
