GPS Students Are Providing For Iraqi Children posted October 21, 2005
The humanitarian mission was initiated by CPT Mark Sherkey’s Field Artillery battery. While the infrastructures of the schools in Iraq are being repaired, this outreach program has seen thousands of boxes or care packages delivered to local villages by uniformed service members. Members of the GPS troop packaged the pens, pencils, colored pencils, colored markers, sharpeners, glue, and basic art supplies such as water color paints for delivery to the Virginia Tech collection center which is storing supplies also collected during the Boston College/Virginia Tech football game Saturday, Oct. 22. The packets will be shipped to Iraq in November and distributed by American soldiers. The project, part of the troop’s service to the wider community, has involved over two dozen hours of work for the 15 troop members. Sponsors for the troop are GPS faculty member Sonya Steele and retired teacher Pam McConnell. |
