Judge Bevil had a long struggle with cancer and had stayed on the bench as long as he was able.
Mayor Pruett was diagnosed with leukemia, then it went into remission before returning recently.
Judge Bevil was a prosecutor in the local district attorney's office for many years before he was elected judge.
He was 60 years old and had served Division III of the 11th Judicial District since 1990.
"Judge Bevil has been a respected and beloved member of the Tennessee Judicial Conference who will be missed by every judge in Tennessee," said Libby Sykes, interim administrative director of the courts. "I and others who are part of the judicial family were pleased to see him last month at the Judicial Conference at Fall Creek Falls State Park. It is wonderful to have that memory. Our sympathies go out to his family and legions of friends. We have lost one of the state's best judges and a truly wonderful human being."
It will be up to Gov. Phil Bredesen to name his replacement.
Judge Jon Blackwood, a retired judge from Townsend, has been sitting in for Judge Bevil in recent months.
Mayor Pruett was a county school teacher for many years.
East Ridge Fire and Police Chief Eddie Phillips said, "It is with very deep regret that we inform you that Mayor Fred Pruett has passed away this morning after an heroic 10-month battle with cancer. Mayor Fred Pruett was a longtime city official who loved and worked tirelessly for East Ridge. He was deeply loved and respected by everyone."
