Political Season Officially Starts Friday posted November 17, 2005 The floodgates open on Friday for next year's assortment of local, state and national political races. It is the first day for candidates to pick up qualifying petitions for 2006 races. Charlotte Mullis of the election office said the forms are due back in by noon on Feb. 16. They must have the names of at least 25 registered voters in the area where the votes are cast. The county primary is May 2 and the county general is Aug. 3. The state general election is Nov. 7. The May election will include a city judge contest. Sherry Paty is expected to seek a full term for the post she now holds following the mid-term death of Judge John Millican. All nine County Commission posts are up for election as well as five County School Board seats and a number of other county offices. There are also elections for the state House, the seat held by Sen. David Fowler and the U.S. Senate seat held by Bill Frist. Some candidates have already picked up treasurer forms.
