Cotton Attorneys Seeking All Charles Love Tapes
posted January 6, 2006

Attorneys for indicted County Commissioner William Cotton are seeking all tape-recorded statements made by former County School Board member Charles Love.

Attorney Hank Hill said Cotton is entitled to see the transcripts of the Love tapes, though he said he understands there may be "thousands of hours" of them.

Both Cotton and Love - former close cohorts - were charged by the FBI in the Tennessee Waltz sting. Love has pleaded guilty and is cooperating with the government.

Cotton's trial is set Feb. 14 in Chattanooga.

Attorney Hill said he believes the Love tapes may show "numerous criminal acts" by Love.

He said the Cotton defense could use them to impeach Love when he takes the stand against Cotton.

Prosecutors said Cotton is not entitled to the Love tapes that were made in connection with the bogus E-Cycle firm.

They said they would turn over any items the defense is entitled to by Feb. 1, though they said they normally would do so "a day or so before the trial."

Cotton and Love once had a lobbying firm together.

Cotton has qualified for another race to hold his District 4 seat. He did not attend Wednesday's commission meeting.
