Flurry Of Candidates Pick Up Qualifying Papers
posted January 6, 2006

Four incumbent General Sessions Court judges picked up papers for re-election on Friday, while two new-comers got papers for the fifth division.

Richard Holcomb is the incumbent in Division I. He has not said whether he will seek re-election.

Christie Mahn Sell and Bob Davis picked up papers for that race. Mike Acuff of the public defender's office is also expected to run for that judgeship.

Incumbents picking up were Bob Moon, Ron Durby, Clarence Shattuck and David Bales. Judge Bales was recently appointed by the County Commission after Mike Carter resigned. Judges Moon and Durby quickly brought their papers back and qualified.

Hallie McFadden has announced that she will challenge Judge Bales.

Attorney Jeffrey Atherton picked up as a Republican candidate for Circuit Court Division II. That is the seat being vacated by Sam Payne. Picking up earlier were Jeff Hollingsworth, Jack Benson Jr. and Richard Pettit.

In County School Board races, Kenny Smith picked up for District 8. Debbie Colburn is not seeking re-election.

Incumbent Everett Fairchild picked up in District 3.

Chester Bankston picked up for District 9. Marty Puryear is the incumbent.

Other school board seats up this year are Districts 5 and 6. Jeffrey Wilson is the incumbent in District 5 after being named by the County Commission to replace Charles Love. Janice Boydston is the incumbent in District 6.

Congressman Zach Wamp picked up for re-election, and former Mayor Bob Corker picked up for U.S. Senate.

Also picking up were Reps. Gerald McCormick (House 26) and JoAnne Favors (House 29).

Walt "Combat" Ward picked up as a Democratic contender for governor.

Ms. Sell, who has been sitting frequently for Judge Holcomb recently, is an attorney with the law firm of Shumacker Witt Gaither & Whitaker.

She said Friday, “I have lived in Hamilton County all my life and invested substantial time and effort in serving the community. At this point, I feel that the greatest contribution I can make will be to become fully engaged in public service. Over the past 12 years, I have gained significant experience in both civil and criminal law as a judicial clerk, practicing attorney and mediator, with a heavy focus on family relations and conflict resolution. Given the nature of the General Sessions Court and the broad cross-section of the community it serves, I think my experience uniquely qualifies me for the judgeship.”

She also said, “I have a great deal of respect for Judge Holcomb and his years of experience. Due to that, I have talked with him about my desire to run and told him that, if he decides to continue serving, I would not run against him.”

Ms. Sell graduated cum laude from the University of Memphis in 1991 with a bachelor of arts degree. She attended the University of Memphis’ Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, graduating with a J.D. degree in 1994.
