Man And Baby Escape From Duplex Fire posted January 10, 2006 No injuries were reported in connection with a duplex fire Tuesday afternoon in Chattanooga. Rick Christian, 44, said he was asleep on the couch with his 20-month-old daughter when a “popping” sound woke him up. Mr. Christian said thick, black smoke was filling the apartment, so he escaped out the back door with his daughter. Both were uninjured. Mr. Christian’s wife was away at work. The other side the duplex, Apartment A, was unoccupied. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 12:24 p.m. and responded to 2500 Dodson Ave. with several fire companies. Battalion Chief Winston Shields said the fire appears to have started in a bathroom, and the flames were beginning to make their way into the attic before the firefighters got the fire under control. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental. Captain James Whitmire with the Fire Investigation Division said the fire was most likely started by an electrical malfunction. The dollar loss was estimated at around $20,000. The family did not have renter’s insurance. The Red Cross was called in to provide assistance to the family. Chattanooga Police and Hamilton County EMS also provided assistance on the scene. |
