The Soddy Daisy High School Band earned the Grand Champion Concert Band award during competition at the Cotton Bowl.
Under the leadership of Band Director Rick Chambers, 131 band members and 35 chaperones traveled to Dallas, Tex., where they tested their skills against bands from across the country. Competitions included concert band, jazz band and field competition.
Months of rehearsing paid off when the Soddy Daisy High School Band triumphed over bands from Chapman, Kans.; Rockdale, Tex.; Gainesville, Ga.; Olympia Fields, Ill.; Wichita, Ks.; Waterloo, Ill.; Wilmont, Wis; Monroe, La; Yellville, Ark.; Clearwater, Fla.; and Naples, Fla.
The band honed its skills during the fall by participating in the Choo-Choo Marching Classic, the Tennessee Regional USSBA Compeition and the Peach State Competition.
Awards were presented during a New Year’s Eve celebration at Southfork Ranch. In addition to Grand Champions, the Soddy Daisy High School Band also brought home trophies for the following:
- Concert Competition – 1st place in 3rd Division with gold rank.
- Jazz Band – 2nd place in 3rd Division with gold rank.
- Field Competition – 3rd place in 3rd Division
Band Director Rick Chambers said, “I’m very proud of our students who worked hard to master the music, and thankful for the parents who supported us all the way.”
