Highland Park House Suffers Fire Damage posted January 23, 2006 No injuries were reported in connection with a house fire in the Highland Park community late Monday afternoon. Ermaline Griffin said she was cooking food on the stove, but fell asleep after taking some medication for her back. Ms. Griffin said she woke to a "popping sound" as well as a smoke alarm. Upon seeing flames in the kitchen, Ms. Griffin said she got out of the house and called 9-1-1. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 5:14 p.m. and responded to 2313 Union Ave. with several fire companies. Chattanooga firefighters arrived on the scene moments later and quickly made an interior attack on the flames. Battalion Chief Winston Shields said the firefighters did an excellent job of containing the blaze to the kitchen area. There was also smoke and water damage to the rest of the house. The dollar loss was estimated at around $30,000. Ms. Griffin and her husband own the house, and they said it is insured. Her husband was away at the time of the fire. The Red Cross was called in to provide the couple with an alternate place to stay for the night. |
