Child Struck By Car, Motorist Flees, Witness Tracks Him Down posted March 4, 2006 A six-year-old child is in critical condition after being struck by a car on Saturday afternoon. The motorist fled the scene, but was tracked down by a witness and held until police arrived. Members of the Chattanooga Police Department’s Traffic Division are investigating the incident in the 2400 block of 4th Avenue in East Lake. It happened around 2:45 p.m. Police said the child, who was chasing a ball, stepped out in front of a Honda Civic that was traveling north on 4th Avenue. The driver was unable to avoid the child and struck him. The driver then fled the scene in his vehicle, but was chased down by a witness. That witness blocked the suspect driver at the bottom of the ramp, from I-24 onto Westside Drive. Once he had the vehicle stopped, he called Police and detained the suspect until officers arrived. The driver of the Honda Civic is facing numerous charges including leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and driving without a license. The child was transported by Hamilton County Emergency Services to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital and is listed in critical condition. |
