Councilman Pierce In Another Clash As He Seeks To Clean Up Neighborhood posted March 17, 2006 City Councilman Leamon Pierce had another clash as he said he is continuing to clean up his neighborhood at Park City off of Rossville Boulevard near Clifton Hills. Councilman Pierce said, "I'm going to keep on. They are not going to stop me." City Police said they were called by Councilman Pierce to 2800 Morgan Dr. after a man began shouting at the councilman after he took a picture of the man and others in his group. Police ended up arresting the man, Maurice Terry, after they said they found he had a prior warrant for assault. Officers said Councilman Pierce told them he was taking pictures of his property when Terry began cursing and threatening him. Councilman Pierce said he was taking pictures of a new sidewalk in his neighborhood and of a new mailbox he had put up. He said he also took one picture of the group that included Terry as well as his (Pierce's) uncle, who were working on cars. The councilman said that is when Terry became angry about him taking the picture. Councilman Pierce said he "said a few things back to him," then got in his car and called police. Councilman Pierce said he has problems with a group of men that spend time at a nearby vacant lot. He said, "They sit around drinking beer and keeping a fire burning." He said a case about the vacant lot went before city Environmental Court this week. Councilman Pierce earlier had a run-in with a man he said was selling drugs in the neighborhood. Police said the man was sitting in a police car when the councilman walked up. The man spit on Councilman Pierce, who reached in the car and struck him, police said. Both parties were charged with assault. That count against Councilman Pierce is due to come up in Criminal Court in July. |
