Renaissance Park To Open In Early June posted March 28, 2006 After several false starts, the city's new Renaissance Park on the Northshore is set for a grand opening in early June. Dan Kral, of city parks and recreation, said the event will be either June 2 or 3. He said it will be just before the Bella Serra arts festival that will be the first major event in the large new wetlands park that is opposite Coolidge Park on the other side of the Market Street Bridge. Mr. Kral said work is coming along rapidly on completing the park, including finishing up two large mounds that will be playgrounds that kids can climb and roll down. He said there are also spectacular views across to the Tennessee Aquarium and downtown Chattanooga from the two mounds. Mr. Kral said the wetland sections of the extensive park are essentially ready. Much of the park at the former Roper Site is being left in its natural state. Work is set to start in about two months on the Outdoor Chattanooga Pavilion at Renaissance Park. Mr. Kral said it will include restrooms and a meeting room and will be similar to the Walker Pavilion at Coolidge Park. The main offices of Outdoor Chattanooga will be at the Floorcoverings Building next to the Walnut Street Bridge. Mr. Kral said design of the remodeling of that building will start as soon as the city takes possession of it. The city is trading land next to Renaissance Park to developer Don Young for the Floorcovering property. |
