House Transportation Panel Denies Bill To End Driver's Certificate Program
posted March 28, 2006

The House Transportation Committee today voted to postpone legislation sponsored by Rep. Donna Rowland (R-Murfreesboro) that would have ended the state’s driver’s certificate program for illegal immigrants.

The Certificates for Driving (CFD) Program was suspended last month by Gov. Phil Bredesen.

“It is disappointing that this issue has become partisan,” said Rep. Rowland. “We need to end this program now, not reinstate it next year. In a post-9/11 world, we should not liberalize state law and pass the buck to the next General Assembly.”

There was a vote to temporarily halt the program until after this fall’s elections. The legislation postponed today would have ended the program outright.

Rep. Rowland serves the 34th legislative district in the Tennessee House of Representatives, which consists of parts of Murfreesboro and Smyrna.
